Software removal of the particulate filter

In diesel engines, great attention is paid to the issue of environmental friendliness. For this, various solutions are used, which also include a catalytic converter with a particulate filter. This provides filtration of up to 90% of carbon deposits and soot after fuel combustion. But this element also fails. When and why do you need to remove the particulate filter – we’ll figure it out.

Assignment of the particulate filter

The filter is responsible for cleaning the exhaust from soot particles in vehicles with diesel engines. It is installed in the exhaust system behind the exhaust manifold.

Also, the filter can be equipped with a forced cleaning system to extend its life. It has temperature sensors. When they detect an increase in exhaust gas temperature, the regeneration system kicks in.

Often, this part causes inconvenience to drivers due to the unpredictability of its work  and cheap cost. Therefore, for many, the price of removing a particulate filter is more rational than constantly replacing it.

Particulate filter malfunctions

A malfunction will first be reported by the on-board computer with an indicator on the instrument panel. You can also understand that the spare part is not suitable by signs:

  • problems with starting the vehicle;
  • changes in the sound of the engine;
  • increased fuel consumption;
  • power reduction (during overclocking).

The main reason is the poor quality of the fuel. Less commonly, mechanical damage to the hull and frequent trips over short distances can occur. when the temperature of the gases does not have time to rise to the level of regeneration.

If there is no space left in the filter block for the exhaust to exit, the gases will return to the internal combustion engine. As a result, oil will begin to flow, the motor will overheat and fail. Exhausts can also damage the EGR valve.

Removing the particulate filter – is there any benefit?

The removal procedure is completely safe for the vehicle. To do this, in most cases it is necessary to partially dismantle the exhaust system. But this is not enough, it is also important to work with the control unit software.

The cost of removing the particulate filter will provide such points:

  • fuel savings;
  • more dynamic;
  • reducing the load on the engine;
  • reducing the cost of repair services

If you are interested in how much it costs to remove a particulate filter, then the amount depends on the complexity of the software operations and the procedure for physical intervention in the exhaust system.

Particulate filter removal features

The dismantling process involves two steps – physical and software.

During the first, the case with the cartridge is removed and opened. Then carefully remove the filter. If the catalytic converter is good, it can be left on to reduce exhaust odor. A flame arrester is placed in place of the filter, after which the housing is closed and installed on the vehicle.

Then comes the software removal of the particulate filter, the price of which may vary depending on the complexity of working with the computer. This stage is very important, because you need to disable the sensor control so that the ECU does not give errors.
